I went to an awesome training on Community on friday given by advocates and people with disabilities that opened my eyes. The topic of the training was Community and what it means. The panel talked about what community was to them. They talked about being able to step outside their confort zone and how staff protected them and didn't let them fail and how the community scared them because some of them had to step outside their confort zone to become more independant and try new things and that it was scary at first. Our instints as staff is to protect our clients so they don't fail we don't always let them spread their wings they want to try new thing independently with us in the wings ready to help if they need us but invisible just watching them. I learned that alot of people think we don't help them become independant we squash their independance because we don't let them fail so they can learn from their mistakes. I have never thought like this but we as staff have alot to learn from our clients we have to let them experiment and step outside the box to promote their independance even though we don't want then to fail they may learn by their failure and then try again and succeed Whay a wonderful thing that would be as we will have succeeded too in bringing the community to them and they will be excited to be a part of the community and share their gifts for all to see.
